Number of Animals Used for Testing, by Species


820,812 animals were used for research, testing, and education in the United States and Puerto Rico in 2016, the latest year for which government research was available. That number includes 139,391 rabbits, 60,979 dogs, and 18,898 cats. That numbers excludes animals that are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act, including cold-blooded animals (such as reptiles and most fish), farm animals used for food, and birds, rats, and mice specifically bred for use in research.

New Jersey used 70,812 animals in 2016, the most of any state, followed by California (68,759) and Massachusetts (63,766); Wyoming used the fewest at 233. All data below were reported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Data for 2010 is available here.
