Number of Animals Used for Testing, by Species

This table presents the number of animals used for research, testing, and education in the United States and Puerto Rico in fiscal year 2010, as reported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Because APHIS only reports animals covered by the Animal Welfare Act, the numbers exclude cold-blooded animals (such as reptiles and most fish), farm animals used for food, and birds, rats, and mice specifically bred for use in research.
